The 28th in the line of Shimazu clan lords of Satsuma Domain, Shimazu Nariakira (島津斉彬) accomplished the Shuseikan project which was Japan’s first western industries.
At that time, Japan was a small closed feudal country, and the world was changing a lot. Nariakira feared Japan being colonized by Britain and he thought that the act of strengthening both the military and industry was very important. So, he chanted two slogans which are “Enrich the country, strengthen the military (富国強兵)” and “Encouragement of New Industry (殖産興業)”.
You’ll be surprised at how many things did, and how big the influence on that era and us who are living now!
