Useful Tips

Money

Exchange

In almost all main banks indicating an authorized money exchange, you can exchange money. Banking hours are only from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. weekdays, so you have to check the time carefully. You can also exchange money at hotels, travel agencies with authorized money exchange signs displayed. There is no exchange office in Kagoshima.

Travellers’ checks are not readily accepted in Kagoshima. You can exchange them at banks, hotels and travel agencies indicated by a sign announcing an authorized money exchange.

Credit Cards

Credit cards are accepted in department stores, restaurants and hotels, but not cheap restaurants and shops. VISA is the most widely accepted card, but AMEX, Diners and Master Card are also recognised.

To get cash by credit cards:

* Automatic Teller Machines in Kagoshima Chuo Station : Machines accepting various (overseas) credit cards are available at the Cashing corners next to a convenience store and behind Starbacks Coffee on the 1st floor of Kagoshima Chuo Station.

* Automatic Teller Machines in post offices accept overseas published credit cards in Kagoshima. Cashing machines are usually placed inside of post office. Most post offices closed at 5:00 and weekends. Main post offices close at 7:00 and on Sunday.

* You can get cash by VISA at Sumitomo Bank near Izuro (Tenmonkan). You need to show your passport. Sumitomo bank opens from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. weekdays.
