*As of May 2023, the MINATO Cafe menu has changed as below.
*The Magma Chicken Burger Set is not on the menu.
*The Sakurajima Curry Set is one plate of curry and salad, with a drink and mini-sweets (￥ 1,580).
*Lunch boxes are also available ((Reservations required!).
 

This cafe at The Sakurajima Port Terminal is just the kind of place that Kagoshima has been needing.

“MINATO Cafe” takes its name from the following;
-It is at the port (minato)
-Share things with everyone (minna-to)
-MINATO Cafe

The NPO Sakurajima Museum launched a crowdfunding campaign to establish the cafe and the project gathered ¥6,430,000, which is ¥830,000 more than its aim. Fourteen months have passed since the cafe opened.

You can see the ferry terminal, Kagoshima Bay and Kagoshima city from the cafe. Its interior is based around the color white and wood, so it has a warm, modern feeling. It is located at the south end of the terminal, so it is quiet and a good place to relax a little.

Unique Menu

― Drinks －

Since you came to Sakurajima, it’s worth trying “Sakurajima Lava Coffee (500 yen)”. Crushed coffee jellies are mixed in a gradation of iced coffee and milk.

There are coffee and cafe latte, several kinds of tea and juice on the menu.

“Komikan (small citrus unshu) Green Tea (250 yen) is another drink especially worth trying because the komikan is the local product there.

A set of 10 coffee tickets for 1500 yen is also available if you’re a regular.

― Sweets －

Since Sakurajima is an active volcano, “Ash Cream (500 yen)” is recommended! Of course, the real volcanic ash is not on top of the ice cream, but it’s represented by black powdered sugar. (If you wanted to eat the real ash, sorry, but they don’t offer it here. However, there’s an unlimited supply outside!) A huge sweet potato chip is stuck on the cream.

“Sakurajima Sundae (700 yen)” also has the Sakurajima lava motif. Its pretty color is instagrammable!

“Magma Chicken Burger (Drink Set: 850 yen)” is a substantial meal with a little spicy sauce. Sweet potato chips are served with it.
“Sakurajima Curry (Drink Set: 1200 yen) is a dish with piled rice shaped like the mountain and tomato-based sauce.

New Image of Kagoshima!

 

Kagoshima tourism tends to focus on historical places or people.
But it has a tropical atmosphere and nature with green mountains and beautiful sea, too! We should be able to enjoy the exotic atmosphere which is different from the rest of Japan.
Looking at the waves glittering at a nice table on the terrace with tasty coffee and sweets would be very nice. You might be able to see dolphins swimming in the bay.

Or, walk on the boardwalk along the coast and have a rest in one of the gazebos which are dotted on the walk. Cafes could serve simple meals and drinks.

Kagoshima has the potential to be the place where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery and the nice air more than is happening now, and MINATO Cafe is just the place to start that habit.

Sakurajima is about 15 minutes by ferry from the city center.
Taking the ice cream out and eating it on the ferry ride while looking at Sakurajima is also a great way to spend 20 minutes or so.
