Kamemaru-kan is located about 40minutes drive from Kagoshima city center. If you drive on Route 270 along Fukiage Beach, you can see its green roof with a turtle on it.
This is a direct sales shop which sells agricultural and processed products.
And, around the corner from Kamemaru-kan is a local secret place where you can spend a special time.
Kamemaru-kan (かめまる館) And Kamemaru-an (かめまる庵)
Kamemaru-kan in Fukiage town, Hioki city is located west of Kagoshima city, facing the East China Sea.
Kamemaru-kan processed products shop sells things like Fukure-gashi (ふくれ菓子 / A kind of steamed cake using raw sugar), miso (soybean paste) and pickles made at the special products processing facility “Aji-no Furusato-kan”. The gentle flavor of these products are the results of selected ingredients and the ancient production methods.
There is a soba noodle restaurant, Kamemaru-an next to the Kamemaru-kan.
They offer handmade soba made with 100% Fukiage-grown soba.
Have A Relaxing Time aroung Kamemaru-kan
If you walk around Kamemaru-kan, you might feel like you stray into a world with a slightly different time base, or you might remember the feeling that you played without worrying about time in your childhood.
Hamada bridge (浜田橋)
Hamada bridge is an old bridge over the Yoshinaga River which runs right next to kamemaru-kan.
In the old days, it was called “Nagayoshi bridge” which had two arches, but it was washed away because of flood damage in 1913. After that a 44.8 meter long new bridge which has three arches was built and it was named “Hamada bridge”.
This bridge is said to be the longest stone bridge in Kagoshima prefecture.
This is an attractive bridge you can feel the passage of time from the parapet’s design and the change of the stone color.
Kutajima Shrine (久多島神社)
You can see the white torii gate from the Route 270.
Walk through the rice fields from the path along the river, then, the torii gate is in front of thick trees.
The shrine name “Kutajima” is also the name of a desert island about 12km from the shore.
This island has a legend of Emperor Tenchi’s daughter.
Emperor Tenchi’s wife had a miscarriage around this area. People put the little princess’s body in a little boat and floated it in the sea. The boat suddenly sank, then a huge rock appeared from the sea. This huge rock is said the it is Kutajima island.
The princess had been enshrined on the island, but people couldn’t visit it because of the distance.
So, the shrine near Kamemaru-kan was built to visit for the princess.
Fukiage Beach (吹上浜)
Fukiage beach is located west coast of Satsuma peninsula, and it is 47 km long, one of the three largest sand dunes in Japan.
The path on the right side of Kamemaru-kan will lead you to the beach
The expanse of the coast line and restless waves are special.
There is a little island (probably Kutajima island) and the horizon in the far sight. A heart shaped object made with wire snuggles against a sky-blue table and there a bench placed looking to the sea on the little hill.

Rent-a-cycle
It is a little bit far from Kamemaru-kan to Fukiage beach, so we recommend rent-a-cycle.
The reception time is from 9:00 to 16:00, and rental time is until 17:00. It is free to rent.
Hioki city has a 24 km long beautiful cycling road, “Fukiage-hama Cycling Road”. This road used to be a rail road, so there are Remains of stations of Nansatsu Railway on the roadside. Cycle to some sightseeing spots such as Onamuchi shrine (大汝牟遅神社), Lake Satsuma (さつま湖) is also nice.
You can enjoy the nature and fresh air of Hioki city.
