Goromon is the largest castle gate in Japan, built on the ruins of Kagoshima Castle ( also known as Tsurumaru Castle).
Kagoshima Castle was the former residence of the Shimazu family, lords of the Satsuma clan, and its construction was begun around 1601 by Iehisa Shimazu, who later became the 18th head of the Shimazu family and the first lord of the clan.
Today, the Kagoshima Prefecture Historical Reference Centre Reimeikan stands here.
The Goromon gate, located in the front center of the castle, was destroyed by fire in 1873, along with Kagoshima Castle, but was rebuilt in May 2020 for the first time in 147 years and was used in the NHK historical drama.
The bridge in front of the Goroumon Gate used to be a wooden bridge, but was replaced by a stone bridge in 1810 due to frequent damage.
In early summer, lotus flowers fill the moat.
The Goroumon Gate is lit up every night from sunset to 10 pm. Please enjoy the different seasonal light displays.
