According to Sei Shonagon, an essayist of the Heian period (794-1185), who was admired alongside Murasaki Shikibu, the author of The Tale of Genji, summer is the best time of the year at night.
One of the reasons for this is that fireflies fly.
Speaking of fireflies in Kagoshima, the firefly boat in the Futawatari area of Satsuma Town, Satsuma County, is famous. But this year will be the last year for the Futawatari area firefly boats to be in operation.
The reason is due to the significant decrease in the number of firefly larvae because of rising water levels in the river due to torrential rains, etc., and the aging of the management members formed by local volunteers. We would like to thank everyone for the wonderful experience they gave us.
In 2023, the firefly boat will be in operation for five days from the 20th of May(Sat) to the 24th of May (Wed).
Only one service is scheduled per day.
Advance booking is essential.
