Sakurajima (Minami-dake) erupted early this morning (01:09 AM).
The eruption rose to a height of 2,300 meters, and large volcanic rocks fell over 1000 meters from the crater. A pyroclastic flow traveled about 1.8 km towards the south-west.
It erupted at 02:54 AM again, and the eruption rose to a height of 1,200 meters. Volcanic rocks again fell about 1,000 meters from the crater. There was no Pyroclastic flow with the 2nd eruption.
Kagoshima Local Meteorological Observatory issued an eruption warning at 02:40 AM. The Local meteorological observatory expanded the warning range from a 2km radius to more than 2km from the crater. The Arimura area in Sakurajima is about 2.5km from the crater, but residents are not scheduled to evacuate.
Despite the eruption and pyroclastic flow, it is a very nice day here in Kagoshima, and people are having their usual Sunday morning.
We need to keep an eye on the eruption situation, but nothing has been damaged from this eruption so far.
Editors note* The road joining Sakurajima to the Osumi peninsula is directly below the crater and near the area where the pyroclastic flow occurred. If you are worried about the situation and need to travel that way we recommend using the Tarumizu ferry instead.
