The Meteorological Agency lowered Mount Sakurajima’s volcanic alert from level 4 (the preparation for evacuation) to level 3 (the restriction on entering the mountain) at 16:00 on the 1st of September.
The warning section which has the danger of big volcanic rocks is reduced to 2km from Showa crater and the crater on the top of Minami-dake.
Due to this change, the alert of preparation for evacuation was called off at 16:10 on the same day.
The Meteorological Agency said “We made judgement on Sakurajima that its volcanic activity has been back to the same level as before the alert level was raised”.
In their opinion, magma could have entered a bedrock which is different from the usual volcanic vent and stayed there.
The sign of eruption hasn’t been observed.
The facilities which had been closed are already reopened from the 27th of August.
So, it is safe to visit Sakurajima now.
Arimura Lava Observatory and Furusato Park are still remained closed, but they will soon be opened, too.
Autumn is the outing season here in Japan.
Please enjoy sightseeing in Kagoshima!
