Compared with the winter solstice, the daytime is 4 hours longer on this day.In Japan, the old calendar says that this day is the middle of summer. Though it is in the middle of the rainy season, it is also the busiest time of the year for farmers.In Kansai (関西), people eat octopus to invoke of spreading of the rice crops roots like octopus’s tentacles.
