Let’s Paint with Volcanic Ash!
- Sakurajima Volcanic Ash Art Experience –

Sakurajima Pottery Ogaku Togei, a 5-minute drive from Sakurajima Port, offers a unique Sakurajima experience.

The experience involves painting with volcanic ash that has been colored uniquely. You can draw your underpainting on a postcard-sized paper, or you can choose one with an already drawn underpainting. The picture above is one of several preliminary drawings selected and colored.

All the necessary tools are provided, so you don’t need to bring anything with you.

First, apply glue with a brush to the area of the underpainting you want to color, then spoon the color you want to use from a color-coded container of volcanic ash onto the paper. The ashes that have not been glued on are placed back on the paper on top of the original container. Repeat the process for each color and you are done.

The trick is to use the right amount and width of glue to place the ashes.

The finished work can be framed on the spot.

After the volcanic ash art experience, it is fun to look at the mysteriously shiny Sakurajima-yaki tea sets and plates kneaded with Sakurajima ash that line the shop.
