In the final years of the Pacific War, Chiran was home to an army base for kamikaze operations.
The thoughts and records of many young men who took off from this place, sacrificing their lives, are preserved here.
Photographs of the kamikaze pilots, taken after they received their orders to sortie, depict them with a sorrowful yet calm expression. Also, the display of letters they sent to their families before their final departure, their death poems, and the thousand-stitch belts they were handed before going to war strongly move visitors.
Additionally, there are exhibits such as a Zero fighter plane discovered from the sea, the fully restored Army Type 4 fighter "Shiden," and the Navys' suicide boat "Shinyo."
Outside, the triangular barracks where the kamikaze pilots spent their final days before departure have been reconstructed, offering a glimpse into their last moments. The Chiran Peace Museum was built to preserve and honor the memory of these pilots permanently and to wish for world peace.
