Susuharai is the event to clean the house very carefully to greet the New Year.
This event had already started by the Heian era, and in the Edo era people started to clean on this day (13th), because Edo castle was cleaned on this day, so the citizens followed this lead.
“Susuharai” is different from the normal cleaning. It is a very important event to greet the god of the year. This day used to be the start day of purification before the New Year.
