”Taisetsu (Major Snow / 大雪)” is the 21st of 24 solar terms (節氣) in traditional East Asian calendars.
It is the season in which it snows not only in the mountains but on the plains, too.
It is also the season that the fruits of nandina (heavenly bamboo / 南天) turn red, the season people start to catch yellowtails, and the season when bears start to hibernate.
Ski resorts start to open around this season. Gokase Highland Ski Resort (Gokase, Nishi-usuki county, Miyazaki prefecture) will open December 24th (Fri) and Kuju Suki Resort (Kokonoe-machi, Kusu county, Oita prefecture) will open December 11th (Sat) in 2021.
