SHŌKAN (小寒)
January 5, 2022
“Shōkan (小寒)” is the 23rd of 24 solar terms (節氣) in the traditional East Asian calendars.
It is the beginning of midwinter, the season of the cold wind and the snow.
Shōkan is the middle day between the winter solstice (Tōuji / 冬至) and the major cold (Taikan / 大寒). From this day, people send winter greeting cards inquiring after other people’s health (寒中見舞い/ kanch&ucacr;-mimai), instead of new year cards.
